Rescued from the Mud – WWII Sd.Kfz. 6 Tractor Recovered from a Polish River

For more than seven decades, a rare piece of World War II history lay submerged in an old channel of the Warta River near Pyzdry, Poland. Now, after an ambitious salvage operation, a five-ton German Sd.Kfz. 6 half-track tractor has finally emerged from the watery depths—making it only the fifth known surviving vehicle of its type in the world.

Resting beneath the silt at Białobrzeg since 1945, the vehicle’s location was first tipped off to historians in 2008. However, an undertaking of this scale required significant funding. After a long wait for a sponsor, the green light was finally given to launch the recovery mission.

The August 5 Operation: Fighting Water and Time

On Friday, August 5, an expert recovery crew battled high water levels to bring the heavy military vehicle back to the surface.

Here is how the high-stakes salvage operation unfolded step-by-step:

  • Isolating the Wreck: Engineers constructed coffer dams on both sides of the vehicle to block the river current and pumped out the trapped water.
  • Clearing the Silt: Team members began the painstaking process of digging away decades of accumulated mud.
  • Positive Identification: After two hours of clearing debris, the first components broke through—a track and a section of road wheels—confirming beyond doubt that it was indeed an Sd.Kfz. 6.
  • Securing the Vehicle: Divers braved the dark waters to wrap heavy steel cables around the chassis.

“The steel cable was tightened firmly so that the wreck would slowly separate itself from the mud. We were very surprised when, after a few minutes, the cables became loose… This meant that the vehicle was not suctioned to the bottom and could be pulled out.” — Maciej Boruń, Armored Weapons Museum

What Makes the Sd.Kfz. 6 So Special?

Designed as a medium half-track artillery tractor, the Sonderkraftfahrzeug 6 (Sd.Kfz. 6) was widely used during WWII to transport troops and tow heavy artillery pieces.

What makes this recovery extraordinary:

  • 1 of 5 Worldwide: Out of thousands built during the war, this unit represents only the fifth surviving example known to exist anywhere in the world.
  • Surprising Preservation: Protected by the oxygen-poor river mud, much of the iron chassis and running gear remained remarkably intact despite being underwater for over 75 years.

Next Stop: Full Restoration in Poznań

The recovered half-track is now heading to its new home at the Armored Weapons Museum in Poznań, where a specialized restoration team will work to bring the historical machine back to its former glory.

This is far from the museum’s first miraculous recovery operation:

  • The 2008 StuG IV Salvage: The same institution successfully excavated a rare German Sturmgeschütz IV assault gun from the Rgilewka River in Grzegorzew.
  • Museum Display: After an intensive restoration process, that assault gun was placed on permanent display in Poznań in 2009—a promising benchmark for the future of the newly rescued Sd.Kfz. 6.
