Buried Beneath the Mall – Complete WWII Anti-Aircraft Gun Discovered During Demolition

Imagine tearing down a former department store, only to find a fully intact piece of World War II heavy artillery buried directly beneath the foundation. That is precisely what construction crews stumbled upon during demolition work at the “Treff” site in Halle-Neustadt, Germany.

What was initially reported as a routine unexploded ordnance find quickly escalated into an incredible historical discovery when experts realized what was actually hiding in the dirt.

From a Single Shell to Heavy Artillery

The discovery unfolded unexpectedly on a Thursday afternoon as workers were clearing debris at the former shopping site:

  • Initial Shock: Construction workers spotted a suspicious metallic object lodged in the ground around noon.
  • False Assumption: Early reports suggested the object was merely a single unexploded shell from a World War II anti-aircraft unit.
  • The Big Reveal: Upon closer examination by ordnance experts, the object proved to be the entire anti-aircraft gun itself, complete with surrounding ammunition.

“Upon closer examination, it turned out to be an old anti-aircraft gun.”

— Dominique Schneegaß, Southern Saxony-Anhalt Police Directorate

What Was Recovered?

The explosive ordnance disposal service (Kampfmittelbeseitigungsdienst) was called in immediately to secure the perimeter and extract the heavy relic.

By Friday morning, the team successfully unearthed and loaded the complete setup, which remarkably included:

  • The Main Gun Body: The complete barrel and firing assembly.
  • Original Hardware: The intact hand crank used to elevate and aim the gun.
  • Mounting Frame: The structural base that secured the gun during operation.
  • Live Ammunition: Multiple anti-aircraft shells recovered alongside the mount.

EOD Operation & Site Safety

Due to the presence of active explosive shells, the disposal team carefully secured the gun before transporting it away from the urban site for safe handling.

Because anti-aircraft emplacements frequently held stockpiles of ready-to-use ammunition, authorities continued inspecting the surrounding ground for any remaining buried explosives before construction work could safely resume.
