WWII German SC-500 Bomb Defused in Sumy Region, Ukraine

An explosive reminder of World War II history was neutralized in northeastern Ukraine. Bomb disposal technicians from the Interregional Center for Rapid Response of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (DSNS) have successfully disarmed and destroyed an unexploded German SC-500 aerial bomb.

Forest Discovery Near Nepliuievo

The massive ordnance was uncovered by local forestry workers in a wooded area approximately 500 meters from the village of Nepliuievo, located in the Shostka Raion of the Sumy region.

Recognizing the immense danger, the workers immediately alerted authorities via the emergency hotline 101.

“After lying buried in the ground for more than 70 years, the aerial bomb still posed a serious threat to nearby communities.”

Controlled Disposal and Safety Protocol

To neutralize the hazard, explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) specialists initiated a careful extraction procedure:

  1. Extraction & Loading: Technicians carefully secured and loaded the 500 kg bomb into a specialized bomb-disposal vehicle.
  2. Transport: The explosive was moved to a designated demolition site far from residential areas.
  3. Controlled Detonation: The bomb was safely destroyed in a controlled environment.

The Ongoing Threat of Historic Munitions

Unexploded ordnance (UXO) from World War II continues to present deadly risks across Eastern Europe. The report highlights the critical need for caution, recalling a tragic incident from the previous summer in the Kharkiv region where a 39-year-old man lost his life due to the accidental explosion of an 80-year-old artillery shell.
