He 111

The Heinkel He 111 was a German medium bomber and one of the Luftwaffe‘s most iconic frontline aircraft of World War II, serving from the Spanish Civil War until the end of the conflict (and remaining in operational service with Spain’s CASA until 1965). Developed in the early 1930s by aeronautical engineers Siegfried and Walter Günter under Ernst Heinkel—initially designed to surpass commercial passenger plane speeds, as famously demonstrated by the smaller He 70 Blitz—the project quickly caught the attention of the Reich Air Ministry as a high-speed design easily adaptable for military use under the guise of civil aviation. Following early civil and military prototypes (such as the V1 through V4) featuring distinctive elliptical wings, the type entered mass production, proving highly successful during the Spanish Civil War with the Legion Condor and acting as a primary backbone of the Luftwaffe during the invasion of Poland and the Battle of Britain. Over 7,600 units were produced across numerous variants, transitioning through several major design and powerplant configurations: early pre-production models like the He 111A-0 suffered from underpowered BMW VI engines, but subsequent variants like the He 111B and E introduced Daimler-Benz and Junkers Jumo 211 engines, improved bomb loads up to 2,000 kg, and straight-edged wings that simplified manufacturing; the P-series introduced the famous fully-glazed, aerodynamic asymmetrical nose cockpit for enhanced visibility, powered by Daimler-Benz DB 601 engines; the H-series became the most widely produced variant (nearly 5,900 built), standardizing on reliable Junkers Jumo 211 engines to preserve high-priority DB engines for fighters and evolving into sub-variants for heavy payloads (H-6), night bombing, glider towing, and missile launching (Hs 293 or Fi 103); while specialized designs included the He 111Z Zwilling (“Twin”), a massive five-engined dual-fuselage aircraft built to tow heavy gliders like the Me 321 Gigant, as well as post-war Spanish licence-built versions (CASA 2.111).
