Jagdpanther

The Jagdpanzer V Jagdpanther (Sd.Kfz. 173) was a heavy German tank destroyer developed by Krupp and Daimler-Benz and manufactured primarily by MIAG, MNH, and MBA between January 1944 and March 1945. Built on the proven chassis of the Panther medium tank, it integrated a well-sloped 80 mm frontal armor plate into a fixed casemate structure and was armed with the formidable 8.8 cm PaK 43/3 L/71 gun, which was capable of penetrating up to 193 mm of sloped armor at ranges of 1,000 meters. Driven by a 700 hp Maybach HL 230 engine, the 45-ton vehicle possessed an ideal balance of superior firepower, thick protection, and excellent mobility, rendering it widely regarded as the most effective German tank destroyer of World War II. Organized into heavy anti-tank battalions (schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilungen), the 392 units produced saw combat in Normandy—where three Jagdpanthers famously ambushed and destroyed an entire British Churchill tank squadron in two minutes—as well as during the Ardennes Offensive and against Soviet IS-2 heavy armor on the Eastern Front, with surviving vehicles later serving in the French Army into the 1950s.
