Tauchpanzer III

Tauchpanzer (U-Panzer / Unterwasser Panzer) were modified German Panzer III and Panzer IV medium tanks adapted for submerged bottom-crawling operations, originally developed in mid-1940 for the planned invasion of Great Britain (Operation Sea Lion). Designed to operate at depths up to 15 meters, the vehicles featured fully waterproofed hulls with inflatable seals, rubber covers over guns and vision ports, an 18-meter snorkel hose attached to a float for air intake, seawater engine cooling, and a directional gyrocompass for underwater navigation. All seals could be jettisoned using explosive charges upon reaching shore for immediate combat readiness. By August 1940, 254 tanks (including Panzer II amphibious variants) were organized into four dedicated battalions (Panzer-Abteilung A, B, C, and D). Following the cancellation of the invasion of Britain, the tanks were refitted in spring 1941 with a 2.5-meter fixed snorkel pipe for river crossings and were subsequently deployed during Operation Barbarossa against the Soviet Union.
