As water levels in the Danube River dropped to record lows near Budapest, military historians stumbled upon an astonishing find resting in the riverbed. A World War II-era German DKW motorcycle was uncovered alongside the remains and dog tags of fallen German soldiers—offering a dramatic glimpse into the fierce fighting that took place along the river decades ago.
Experts from Hungary’s Institute and Museum of Military History (HM HIM) immediately launched emergency preservation work to save the rare motorcycle and the remarkably preserved artifacts found packed inside its original bags.
The Discovery: A Rare DKW NZ 350-1 Motorcycle
The vehicle was identified as a German-made DKW NZ 350-1, a popular military motorcycle built specifically for Wehrmacht dispatch riders and personnel during WWII.
“Staff at the Institute and Museum of Military History (HM HIM) have begun urgent cleaning and conservation work to preserve the motorcycle and restore the recovered artifacts.”
Despite spending decades submerged in river mud, the contents of the motorcycle’s side case and saddlebags remained extraordinarily intact.

Intact Tools and Field Equipment Recovered
When museum specialists carefully opened the motorcycle’s storage compartments, they discovered a complete array of wartime maintenance gear and personal items:
- Engine Maintenance: A Bosch W 175 T 1 spark plug kept in a Bakelite holder, a spark plug wrench, and a cylinder head wrench.
- Lubricants & Care: An oil bottle, a tube of grease, electrical tape, and a small wire brush.
- Tire Repair Kit: Fully intact adhesive, patch materials, and a tire pressure gauge.
- Spare Parts & Field Tools: Replacement V-belts, a spare chain link, various screw heads, and a hammer head.

Fallen Soldiers and Battlefield Relics
Tragically, the motorcycle was not found alone. In the immediate vicinity, searchers located the human remains and identity tags of two German combatants: a Wehrmacht soldier and a Waffen-SS soldier.
Among their belongings was a notable military decoration:
- The Kuban Shield (Kubanschild): A prestigious campaign sleeve badge awarded to German troops who fought during the heavy defensive battles at the Kuban bridgehead between February and October 1943.

Preservation Efforts at the Military History Museum
The discovery was made possible by historic low water levels along the Danube, allowing researchers and authorities to access previously submerged riverbed sections. The Institute and Museum of Military History is currently cataloging, cleaning, and stabilizing all metal and leather items to prevent rapid deterioration after their removal from the water.
Once conservation is complete, the preserved artifacts and motorcycle will serve as a poignant memorial to the turbulent wartime history of the Danube.
